Stem Cell Therapy

Stem Cells are undifferentiated cells in our bodies that have the capacity to change into any healthy cell in our body. Meaning they can change into skin, bone, heart and muscle cells to name a few. They have the ability to replicate substantially as compared to normal somatic cells such as skin. Stem cells are located throughout our body in almost every organ and tissue such as bone marrow, fat, teeth, muscles, etc. However, as other cells in our body, stem cells also age as we do.

Presently, stem cells have the capacity to replace bone, fat, cartilage, heart tissue, muscle, etc.

This shows much promise for many disease states. In fact, there are greater than 5000 clinical studies with stem cells found on the United States clinictrials.gov website. This demonstrates the progress and promise of stem cells.

Today, people are receiving stem cell therapies in the treatment of a wide variety of medical diseases/disorders and traumas. The use of stem cells is becoming common practice with orthopedics as it may help deter a knee replacement or surgical procedure and improve function of joints following injury. Practitioners today are also using stem cells within disciplines such as pain management, cardiology, rheumatology, and neurology.

The beauty of stem cell therapy is that it mimics a process that is ongoing in your body all the time. Your stem cells are continuously promoting healing, and they do not have to be manipulated in any way. The stem cells naturally know how to home in on areas of inflammation and how to repair damaged tissue.

Regenerative medicine is the process of replacing, renewing or engineering human cells, tissues, organs, proteins, etc for the purpose of restoring function and homeostasis in the body. One of the key components of regenerative medicine is the use of cell replacement strategies which usually requires stem cells.

Types of Stem Cells:

  • Autologous – these stem cells are harvested from the client’s own bone marrow and/or fat cells.  These cells contain your own genetic makeup and blood typing, reducing the risk of rejection or reaction.  As we age, the amount of stem cells in our bodies decrease in number and in function.  The older you are, the more bone marrow or fat that is needed in order to obtain an appropriate amount of functioning stem cells.

  • Fetal or Embryonic – these stem cells are harvested from an embryo or fetus.  These cells are pluripotent, meaning that the recipient now takes on the donor’s genetic risk of those cells!  When you hear about people getting cancer or other inherited diseases after stem cell infusions, this is why!

  • Umbilical – these stem cells are taken from the donated umbilical cord from a healthy mother and a healthy term infant. These cells have no genetic markings or blood typing, making them very acceptable to the body.  These cells are mesenchymal, meaning that they are able to become whatever type of cell is needed for repair… muscle, bone, tendon, ligament, organ, tissue… whatever is needed by the body!  Think of the growth a baby goes through in the first year of life!  This is the same growth potential in the body for healing!  Umbilical stem cells are great in number and work better than any others, as far as healing!  We use umbilical cells in our office.
